A full garden redesign doesn’t just change how a space looks; it changes how a family uses it every single day. This project in Worcestershire is a good example of that. The brief was straightforward: transform an underused outdoor area into something practical, low-maintenance, and genuinely enjoyable for both adults and children. Here’s how we delivered it.

The Starting Point
Like many residential gardens across Worcestershire, this outdoor space had plenty of potential but wasn’t working hard enough. Clay-heavy Midlands soil makes artificial lawns difficult to maintain year-round, wet winters leave them waterlogged and worn, and dry summers leave them patchy and brown. The client wanted a garden that would look consistently good, stay safe underfoot for children, and require minimal upkeep week to week.
Our brief covered every element of the space: surface materials, drainage, zoning for adults and children, planting boundaries, fencing treatment, and detailing. We handled the full programme from initial ground preparation through to final finishing.
Porcelain Paving: Built for Worcestershire Weather
The patio is the heart of this garden, and choosing the right surface material was critical. We specified large-format porcelain slabs in a contemporary grey finish, a practical choice for several reasons that are particularly relevant in the Midlands.
Why porcelain rather than natural stone or concrete?
Natural stone looks beautiful but it’s porous, which means it absorbs water, encourages moss growth, and can crack in frost. Concrete flags stain easily and can look tired within a few seasons. Porcelain sits at the opposite end of the maintenance scale: it’s frost-proof, non-porous, highly resistant to staining, and holds its colour and texture for years without sealing or specialist cleaning.
The grey tone works well with the dark-painted fencing and the green of the artificial lawn, it gives the garden a cohesive, contemporary feel without looking cold or corporate.
Maintenance tip: Porcelain paving stays clean with a regular brush and occasional rinse. For stubborn algae in shaded corners, a diluted patio cleaner applied in spring is usually all that’s needed. No sealing, no specialist products required.

Artificial Grass: The Practical Choice for Family Gardens
If you’ve got children who want to use the garden regularly, artificial lawn is worth serious consideration — especially in Worcestershire, where the clay soils and wet winters make artificial lawns a constant maintenance challenge.
The artificial lawn in this project was laid over a prepared sub-base with a proper drainage layer, ensuring water moves through freely rather than sitting on the surface. The timber edging between the lawn and patio gives a clean, defined boundary that ties the two surfaces together neatly.
- Stays green and usable all year, regardless of weather
- No mowing, feeding, aerating, or seasonal care required
- Drains effectively through the sub-base
- Withstands heavy foot traffic from children without wearing thin
- Particularly well-suited to clay-heavy Worcestershire soils
- Safe, soft surface for play
The quality of artificial grass varies considerably. We only use products with a natural appearance and sufficient pile depth to feel comfortable underfoot — the lawn in this project is a good example of how realistic modern artificial grass can look.

The Children’s Play Zone: Safe, Durable, and Well Integrated
One of the key client requirements was a dedicated space for children, somewhere that felt like it belonged in the garden rather than being bolted on as an afterthought. We designed a play zone at the rear of the lawn using pressure-treated timber construction throughout.
The raised timber sandpit doubles as a storage area and forms a natural back boundary to the lawn. The climbing frame and slide are built from the same treated timber, giving the whole play area a cohesive, well-crafted appearance that holds up well against the weather.
Positioning the play area on the artificial lawn rather than the patio was a deliberate safety decision. Falls happen, the artificial lawn provides a far more forgiving surface than porcelain or gravel.
Fencing, Borders, and Finishing Details
The dark grey painted fence panels make a significant difference to the overall look of this garden. Painting or treating existing fence panels is one of the most cost-effective ways to modernise a garden, the deep charcoal tone creates a clean, contemporary backdrop that makes the green of the lawn and the grey of the patio pop.
The white gravel border running along the fence line provides a clean edge that separates the lawn from the fence, reduces maintenance around the perimeter, and improves drainage.
Planting and Structure
A clipped topiary ball anchors the transition between patio and lawn on one side of the garden. This kind of structural planting gives year-round form to a space that might otherwise feel flat in winter. Potted plants and seasonal planting pockets add colour without creating ongoing maintenance demands.
Design note: Using a consistent colour treatment across fences, gate, and storage unit (all charcoal grey) gives a garden a much more considered, professional feel. It’s a simple discipline that ties diverse elements together.

What a Full Garden Transformation Actually Involves
Projects like this one look effortless in the finished photos, but the quality of the result comes from the preparation work. Here’s what our team completed on this project from start to finish:
- Site survey and design agreement: confirming the brief, materials, and programme.
- Ground clearance and excavation: removing existing surfaces, vegetation, and topsoil.
- Sub-base preparation: compacted MOT Type 1 base for both patio and lawn areas.
- Drainage installation; ensuring water moves away from structures and off surfaces.
- Porcelain paving installation laid on a full mortar bed to the correct falls and alignment.
- Natural lawn installation: fitted over the prepared sub-base with timber edging.
- Timber construction: sandpit, climbing frame, and slide in pressure-treated timber.
- Gravel border installation: weed membrane and white gravel along fence lines.
- Fencing treatment: all panels and structures painted in the agreed grey finish.
- Final detailing and clean-up: checking all surfaces, joints, and edges.
